What does philosophy mean?

answers1: Philosophy is 'original critical thought';

Religion doesn't believe in 'original critical thought', it is all
about 'beliefs'.
If you are worried that some religion would be against thinking for
yourself, you won't be able to achieve actual philosophy anyway.
Hang with 'beliefs', anyone can have any beliefs; and the lds has some
doosies!
You have to be sincerely incapable of 'philosophical thought' to
believe that crap!
answers2: I will try to be organized and logical about this one.

Philosophy is commonly the discipline concerned with the ultimate
questions, founded approximately by Aristotle in his writing called
Metaphysica (the origin of the word, metaphysics). Metaphysics defined
that some of nature's questions may exist in the abstract. This is in
keeping with a celestial god, because the questions can be answered in
the abstract---they can 'seem' irrational without 'being' irrational.
Aristotle also founded the logical syllogism, which by association
with metaphysics became a powerful tool for 'seeing into the
universe'. Accepting philosophy is like accepting the mind. Philosophy
today, as a function of Aristotle (who was called 'The Philosopher' in
medieval europe) and his followers, consists of three major
disciplines: Logic, Ethics, and Metaphysics (Ontology), all of which
have (at least) had a profound effect upon the Catholic Church.

A god that doesn't exist would be upset, because such a god cannot be
logical. But an irrational god would have no problem with philosophy,
because it is yet another set of laws that can be perversified. It is
tempting to say that philosophy is a form of feminine for God, which
is definitely in the tradition somewhere. The Cabbalah for example, is
a Jewish mystical study of the truth of God, presumably as a form of
logic. Logic to the human mind, but not to God. Logic makes no
difference to god, is the intuitive answer.
answers3: Everything that is seen has another dimension which is real
like gold in all ornaments water in all waves etc to in quire into
this cause of the world and the individual is philosophy
answers4: No. BYU, owned and funded by LDS, has a whole department for
studying philosophy:

Usually philosophy and religion touch on similar subjects, and the
language and manner of thinking and explaining both sorts of concepts
is similar. Learning to be a scholar of religion would help you be a
scholar of philosophy, and vice versa. LDS believe that any truth you
gain in life is a benefit to you eternally, and that God is and has
all truth. When philosophy is a true love of wisdom and search for
truth, it's just want God wants for people.
answers5: philosophy is like hot and cold mingling together to create
one temperament of warmth
answers6: Philosophy is a very good way to confuse oneself and to keep
him from ever coming to a knowledge of the truth.

Most philosophy exists to justify one's own tastes and to decry
everybody else's.

However, I think God would have no problem at all with someone getting
a good introduction to Kantian ethics. As far as philosophical
systems go, it's number one. The problem, though, is that no
philosophical system has -- or can have, for that matter -- an eternal
perspective, so they all fall short.
answers7: The pursuit of knowledge and applying it to life. I do not
think it is against religion it might actually teach you how to
understand religion in a way so that you can relate. I think religion
with some philosophy might make God happy because you are learning
about life and ALL PATHS LEAD TO GOD!
answers8: Actually, it is not anything with knowledge, since one of
the more popular questions in philosophy is whether we can even know
anything.

Philosophy actually translate to "love of wisdom". Socrates once
said, "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing".

Many theistic philosophers such as Descartes, Pascal, Socrates and
others would say that philosophy and reason was given to us by the
gods or God. Socrates was tried and wrongly convicted for being an
atheist, (as well as corrupting the youth), and was sentenced to
death. His defense for using philosophy as a guide to the truth was
that he was doing what the gods/God had wanted. Ironic ending for
him; he was put to death for supposedly being an atheist, yet his only
defense was that he was fulfilling God's wishes. I think people just
got mad because he made politicians look stupid when he used his
dialectic method to show their errors in reasoning. But it seems that
most great philosophers don't believe it goes against any religion or
spirituality or deity. In fact, religion is a stem of philosophy.

I hope that answers your question.
answers9: There is no restriction against learning philosophy, just
know that philosophy is flawed, just like all the conjectures of men.
answers10: Clever phrases by using a wise man. And it is by Voltaire,
no longer volitaire. Now i am now not a historical past-informed,
however what I get that to mean is that one will have to judge
individuals with the aid of their willingness to ask questions. For
example, if any one does not ever ask, but always claims to know, then
he is almost always regularly unsuitable. Also, the questions must be
the right kind of questions. For instance, any one who asks "How do i
know i'm right?" is being extra sincere to himself than anyone who
would not ask that of himself, however nonetheless perpetually claims
to have solutions. Edit: Yea, no trouble. You see how to get first
reply on an answerboard like that is to first post an incomplete reply
after which edit it to completion. It is only a tactic i use,
considering that I think it's unfair that the extra entire an answer
is, the later it is going to be posted, and the much less men and
women will see it.
