Shelley Stevens: Many of the posters here have basically explained what global warming is. I don't think there should be much debate on that. As far as what causes it is where the great debate takes place. Regretfully, few of the larger fear mongers out there want to talk about the cyclical nature of climate change and the fact that we have gone through many periods of more significant and rapidly changing average global temperatures during the history of the earth than what we are going through now. While mankind may well have some impact on global climate change with the emission of greenhouse gasses, there is plenty of evidence to support that what is happening right now is natural. The earth has, on a fairly regular basis, gone through these changes. There are also instances where the cyclical nature of climate change has been given a jolt by an asteroid striking the surface of the planet or the eruption of a super volcano (Read up on Yellowstone National Park for! more info on these) puts so much dust into the air that it has brought on severely colder temperatures world wide. We can certainly do much to make our planet a more livable place and help clean up the earth but they aren't going to stop the current trend of warming. One day the earth will kill us or force us to take extreme measures to survive. It has done so with countless other species on our planet. Most people don't realize it but 99% of all plants and animals that have live don this planet are today, extinct. Considering how many different species we have on the earth now, that is a staggering thought. We are better equipped to deal with climatological change than our ancestors and one day (and this is a VERY VERY long way off) we may well be put into a situation where life as we know it now will be history. It sounds dark and scary but there isn't much we can do about it but use our own ingenuity to find the way to survive....Show more

Tomeka Hameen: Global Warming is more accurately global climate change. What causes it is that the solar energy that enters Earth's atmosphere, 70% of which is abosorbed by the Earth's surface, and 30% that is reflected back, cannot escape the atmosphere due to the abundance of greenhouse gases (the most prevalent of which is carbon dioxide). Thus the temperature is elevated within the troposphere. (The level at which we live). The effects are as varied as shorter, milder winters; increased severity of storms; damage to se! nsitive ecosystems (like coral reefs, and the cloud forests in Costa Rica); loss of biodiversity due to extinction or extirpation (local extinction) of sensitive species; shifting weather patterns and habitat loss. Humans can begin to reverse the effects of global climate shift, but it will take serious changes in behavior, which must start with people in developed countries like the US and Britain. Carbon Dioxide is one of the most abundant greenhouse gases. It has become such a problem not only because of the sheer number of vehicles on the road (of which most use fossil fuels, which emit CO2), but also from use of coal and natural gas to provide electricity and heat, and the tendency that wealthier countries have to cut down forested areas and replace them with shopping centers. Trees and plants breathe in CO2, and could help draw CO2 out of the atmosphere, if we would let them stand. In addition, we need to cut back on the use of fossil fuels, which involves investment ! and research not only in the new renewable resources (wind & solar in p! articular), but also in alternative fuel sources for vehicles, since emissions from automobiles is one of the main contributors to the problem. Although fossil fuels may be less expensive at the moment, the cost to the environment is much greater. (And the FACT of the matter is, it is NOT a renewable resource--whether it is 40 years from now or later, the rate at which we are utilizing fossil fuels far surpasses it's ability to recharge its supply. So, if people would commit themselves to engaging in activities that will utilize less fossil fuels, and vote with their wallets for products that conserve energy, perhaps we can actually do something about this problem! Thanks for asking!...Show more

There is irrefutable evidence that man's activities over past years has changed the atmosphere and has led to a change in the balanced greenhouse effect we need to survive on this planet. As the effect gets stronger as it has now, we will experience more intense weather events as the basic mechanisms of weather respond to a higher energy input. There is always a natural cycle of hot/cold, dry/wet but many extreme events can be attributed in part to the probable cause called "man induced climate change" (scientifically we cannot make the definitive statement).
