Is education, indoctrination?

Marhta Teahan: Education never was indoctrination nor ever shall be! Who forces a child to go to school! For becoming a good human being... to learn skills for earning bread-and-butter children went to schools! Education was primarily meant for physical manifest self... to earn a livelihood during earthly sojourn of 70 to 80 years of life!Enlightenment... spiritual path and religious way of life... all are meant for seeking within! None forces another to pursue a particular spiritual path or path of religion! If we have been born in a particular religion... we are bound to follow tenets of that religion in the early stages of life! When we grow up... it is up to us to follow our religion or another! In Christianity... none forces another to go to a church! In Hinduism... none is forced to go to a Temple! If one goes to church or Temple... it is of our own willingness! Path of spirituality and religion are never followed out of compulsion... one always had a right to our fr! ee will!Anyone willing to search God in present life time would adhere to path of spirituality... never path of religion... path of rituals! For finding God in present life time... for reaching stage of enlightenment we have to pursue path of pure spirituality... no matter what! The sacred Bhagavad Gita of Hinduism says every single soul atman is independent of another! It is following path of spirituality human gods like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed finally gained enlightenment in their lifetime! However, if I am a member of a particular sect or belief it is quite possible that tenets of that belief are forced upon me! Still, one retains right to free will all the time! Cedric Grimstead: Indoctrination methods were used when I was in school. For example, many things were committed to memory through the use of conditioning repetition. The alphabet and ! multiplication tables are two examples of such techniques. Th! ere were similarities, but the biggest differences that I can think of was that school taught me not only to question, but also how to use various resources to find the answers and then how to test the answers for truth, where religious indoctrination makes a point of discouraging independent thought and rejection of other points of view.Public schools did (at least in my case) use similar covert mind control techniques, but, the goals of the public schools I attended were polar opposite of churches I attended. The public schools not only forced me to think, but also taught me how to think critically. They showed me how powerful my mind was and that I could be or do anything I wanted if I put my mind to it. The churches, on the other hand, belittled me, told me I could not possibly understand, gave me unquestionable answers, discouraged questioning and censored my resources. Public schools worked diligently to open my mind to the endless possibilities of the universe, w! here churches worked just as hard to close my mind.Yes, they do use similar techniques, but their goals are diametrically opposed....Show more

Zora Mazzie: Education becomes indoctrination when you force the person to believe and follow only what you teach them. When you give them free will to learn and believe in things beyond what you teach them, then it is only education.

Nicolasa Henke: Well anyone with half a brain knows that schools are designed to churn out working people who'll do the 9-5 until they're 60.As long as the person is aware of it.

Jackelyn Archut: Sure, education teaches you to think, in a very structured and disciplined way. Would you say that in general, creative thought is a major emphasis in education?

Cornelius Thornborrow: No, completely different forms of teaching/education.Education involves teaching every side, story and view point of a fact/belief. Where as indoctrination involves only teaching what they want you to hear! /know.

Mozell Sponsler: Real education teaches you to think.Facts! are facts....and you need to know about them.So no.....

Donte Hamme: Education = truthreligion = man made nonsense

Estrella Northway: What does the enlightment age have anything to do with my lack of belief or evidence in a God. NOTHING

Bryant Chaudhry: Not always. Education is only education if you are taught to think for yourself. Otherwise, it is merely rote. Rote is the christian method of education/indoctrination......and it is also method used for the most part, by public schools. The only way to truly "learn" is through the use of logic, reason, and the dialectical process. This is why I am an advocate of teaching children philosophy and logic at an early age.Teaching by rote is much easier.....but it isn't better....Show more
