What hardware can get software update ?

William Vickerman: Any hardware that has embedded firmware could be potentially updated if the manufacturer releases an update. This would include the motherboard (BIOS), hard drive, SSD drive, DVD. The updated software is stored on a programmable chip on the device itself, and is called firmware. Also, many devices use device drives -sound cards, mothernboards, video cards, printers. Scanners, keyboards and more. You can update the drivers on these by downloading new driver software that get installed into the operating system of the computer and get loaded at boot time. Because these programs are loaded on the computers drive and not onto the device itself, they are called drivers, and not firmware. Drivers are specific to the operating system, firmware is specific to the device....Show more

Coleman Deliberato: firmware on the cd/dvd player...hard drives...printers and routers etc...cheers
