When shopping for a car is safety a thing to think about?

Emerita Sciandra: Most cars have much higher safety standards today then 5 or 10 years ago. The current safety standards are so high that the rating systems don't give you much useful information. For the most part, any car you buy is going to be safe enough to protect you in most typical accidents. That said, the premium brands like Mercedes and BMW, will tend to protect you more than Kia or Dodge.

Mauro Cowee: It is a factor to consider.

Ardell Luy: If you should have an accident, then safety would be very important. Also, you will get a discount on your insurance for having a car with a higher safety rating.

Pasquale Pollet: Absolutely. I'm car shopping myself...I've had a Buick Century for 6 years (it was my first car) and it's a super safe car but looks like it could belong to my grandfather. I like it, I think it has character, but I wanted something smaller, cuter, and more fuel efficient, but also safe. It's important especially for smaller c! ars, which can easily be crushed in an accident. I decided I am going to get a Honda Fit after much reading and research :)

Ty Kirton: If your a fast driver, have slow reflexes, or u do not take precaution then, yes. One thing is that the better the car is at taking hits the lower mpg (tends to be heavy cars). Weak cars like a civic have good mpg but also has safety risks.

Hugo Pittari: It is one of the most important factors to consider when looking at vehicles; sadly, many people will see a vehicle that has a paint color they like, or wheels, or whatever and don't even consider the safety items

Jade Ohno: Obviously yeah.
